About the Civic User Testing Group

We believe government websites, apps, and services shouldn’t be difficult to use or hard to access. At the City of Chattanooga we’re committed to developing solutions that meet the needs of our residents, businesses, and visitors. For that to happen, we need you! Chattanooga’s Civic User Testing Group provides designers and developers with valuable feedback about the products they create. Partnering with an inclusive and diverse group of residents makes our products and services better—for everyone.

What happens during a user testing session?

In the simplest terms, we’ll show you what we’re working on and you tell us if you like it or not. A session usually takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour. In that time we’ll ask you to look at or interact with a product we’re making.

At the very beginning of the development process we might ask you to look at sketches on paper or basic wireframes on a computer. If we’re further along in the process you might be previewing a full-blown app. We’ll observe and take notes on how you use and interact with the product and ask you questions about your experience. There’s no wrong answers! When the testing session is complete, you’ll receive a $20 gift card.

Your feedback with be shared with the design and development team so that they can take it into account as they continue working on the project.

Storage and Usage of Your Data

Your data will be stored on this secure website and from time to time downloaded onto a local computer to help with user selection. Data held on local computers will be deleted when it is no longer needed. The data you provide will only be used for the User Testing Group program and not used for or shared with any other city program.

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion

We acknowledge that there is often a gender and race gap on software development teams.

In our sign up form, we ask questions about race, gender, and age because we want to make sure the feedback we receive is representative of the diversity within our community.

It’s not required that you answer the questions about race, gender, and age in order to participate in a user testing session. But if you do choose to provide us with that information, it will help ensure that as we work, we’re considering how our products are used and perceived by people of diverse experiences and backgrounds.
